Lakeland Trails in Staveley

2nd May 2026  –  5k, 10k & 21k

  1. Events
  2. Staveley

Are you ready for the Sting in the Trail?

Starting and finishing at Staveley Recreation Ground, the 5K Kentmere Sport Trail, 10K Kentmere Trail Run, and the Trail 1/2-ish Marathon courses follow fully marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of most of the southern Lakeland fells.

The trails climb out from Staveley above the Kentmere valley, before returning along the valley itself past idyllic tarns and through ancient woodland, climbing Reston Scar before the descent back into Staveley village. Underfoot conditions are quite variable and there's a bit of everything! Short sections of tarmac, grassy footpaths, stony bridleways with some stiles to climb over near the end, all add to the unique nature of the event.

The stunning 1/2 Marathon course ventures a little further, over Green Quarter Fell, past the picturesque Skeggles Water before dipping into the dramatic landscape of Longsleddale. Refuel your tanks at the well-stocked feedstation at Kentmere Hall before picking up familiar trails home. Yes, that does mean The Sting in the Trail!

A carnival atmosphere is guaranteed for both spectators and competitors, with live music, race commentary, food and drink all available at the start and finish. So, whether you're new to trail running, an experienced athlete, or simply looking for an unforgettable day out in the Lake District, a family-friendly, festival atmosphere and some amazing trail running awaits you!

Please note the 10k and Half Marathon routes onto Reston Scar are on private land and recces are not allowed on this section.

Update: For over 20 years, we've had special permission to use this section of private land but unfortunately the farmer has understandably said ‘No’ this year because people having been running on it outside of the event.

Viv has done a great job at finding an alternative route to the top of The Sting in the Trail (along with re-doing all of the maps and marshal instructions) which will add on approx. 500m to the 10k and ½ Marathon.

ESSENTIAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

There are roadworks and traffic lights in the centre of Staveley - please drive carefully and allow some extra time for your journey.

To avoid congestion in the village and ensure you get parked up in good time, ONLY use the northern most junction off the A591 in to Staveley (the second one if you are travelling from the M6). Use THIS LINK for directions and then follow our yellow signage to one of our two parking fields.

Note the parking fields are an 8-10 minute walk to the event centre.

Staveley - Race Day

All of the pre-race information is shown below. Please take time to read it carefully.

Can you fill your car with someone from your local club or car share? We've set up a Facebook group to help arrange that. Join that HERE to save money and emissions.

Send us a photo / screenshot of your public transport ticket to the event, or a photo of your bike in the event ground HERE and we'll randomly choose someone for a FREE entry. Staveley train station is very close with regular trains from Kendal and Windermere (see the timetable links below).

Essential Information

We won't be holding a Safety Briefing at the event as all of the ESSENTIAL information is covered below.

✅ Use the northern junction in to Staveley, this is the second exit if you are travelling along the A591 from Junction 36 of the M6. As you approach the village, follow our yellow car park signs which will direct you to one of our parking fields.

NB: There are roadworks and 3-way temporary traffic lights currently right in the centre of Staveley. This means we may have to direct you a different route to the parking fields than in previous years. Please keep an eye out for our yellow car park signage and drive slowly and carefully through the village. Please allow some extra time for your journey as a result of these roadworks.

✅ All day parking is £5 for cars and and £6 for small vans. The parking fields are an 8-10 minute walk from the event centre so allow time for this.

Only SMALL vans (max. VW Transporter size - and even this is tight) are permitted on our event parking (anything bigger would get stuck at the entrance and cause problems for everyone else).

Non-event parking in Staveley is very limited and the roads are narrow so please use our car parks so that residents aren’t inconvenienced. We rely on their support and want to keep them happy.

If you were planning to travel in a motorhome or large van, why not park in Kendal or Windermere and get the train in? You can check the timetable from THIS LINK.

✅If the ground is soft, use LOW revs and set off in a straight line

❌ NO EXIT before 1pm as both car parks have only one entrance / exit

✅ Race number to be collected on the day AT LEAST 45 minutes before your Start Time

✅Your race number must be attached HORIZONTALLY or the timing chip won’t be read

✅ Set off at your allocated time or you won't show on the Results

✅You can swap your entry to the Race, Challenge, 10k or 5k at least 45 minutes before the earliest Start Time of the two (e.g. if you want to swap from the 1pm Challenge to the 2pm Race, 12:15pm is the deadline).

✅To arrange this, edit your entry up to 6 days before the event, contact us up to the Thursday beforehand or in person at Registration on event day.

✅ Carry your own water or bring your own cup for the water stations on course or by the marquee

✅ If you arrive at a closed gate, please close it behind you – there will be lambs in the fields

✅ If you find the terrain is tricky, be prepared to slow down so that you can negotiate it safely

❌No in ear headphones (bone conducting ones permitted)

❌Snot rockets or spitting on the course

❌No pushing past other runners

❌No training/recce runs on the private land climb up Reston Scar on the 10k and Half Marathon routes

✅ Have a wonderful day!
