Keeping the classic midnight start time of the real event, the 100K Virtual Ultra takes you on a journey around some of the most picturesque parts of the Lake District on some of its finest trails. Whether you're setting yourself the challenge of running the full distance as part of a training plan, trying to complete the circuit as many times as possible or pitting youself against inov-8 ambassadors around the world or runners from your own club, it's up to you to set your own goals.
Discounted rate of £14.50 for U16s
Starting at its traditional Saturday morning time, the 55K Virtual Ultra takes you on an equally stunning, but shorter, journey through the Lake District and joining the 100K course in the picturesque town of Glenridding on the shores of Ullswater. As with the 100K event, it's up to decide your challenge - compete the distance in as short a time as possible? Challenge your friends or running club members to make it to the high point of the course at Grisedale Hause? Or simply enjoy taking part with the Lakeland Trails' family and inov-8 ambassadors - it's up to you!
We'll be sending out information to the entrants on Tuesday explaining how they can sync their Strava profile and sign up to the exclusive Facebook group. In the meantime, if you've entered already, why not download your Virtual number to customise?
We've missed seeing all our regular Lakeland Trailers on the trails this year and we've given a lot of thought to how we can setup our first Virtual Lakeland Trails so that it captures the spirit of the events and helps everyone keep in contact & ticking over during the winter months. Of course, if you're new to Lakeland Trails, you're most welcome to take part too!
Our Virtual Lakeland Trails Ultra will follow either the 55K or 100K course, setting off from Ambleside and taking you on an amazing circuit of the Lake District National Park on some of the finest trails you'll find. You can get a taster of the event by checking out the awesome video from the 2019 event!
As you compete in the event, your progress will be plotted on a map of the course and you'll be able to upload your photos, a selection of which we'll publish on the actual route. Our original idea was to get you to take photos on the course itself to encourage you to visit the areas the routes pass through to give local tourism a boost. However, with the current local lockdown restrictions, we want you and the locals to stay safe but we think it will be just as fun to see where your training is taking you (but we'll add photos of the actual course to view as well).
You'll see from the range of prize categories that it doesn't matter if you're running in the heart of the Lake District or the heart of your home city. What does matter is that you're getting out, sharing your runs and at the same time, preparing for a great year back on the Lakeland Trails in 2021.
Your entry will grant you exclusive access to a private group on the Lakeland Trails Facebook page and we're delighted that you'll be joined by a number of inov-8 ambassadors who'll be on hand to answer any questions you may have about training. Never run off road at all? Want to be able to run up the mile-long 'Coffin Trail' hill at Lakeland Trails in Hawkshead? Are you in awe of the speed at which some people fly down the fast descent from Latrigg towards the end of Lakeland Trails in Keswick? The ambassadors will be on hand to share their tips and also give you training ideas to help you develop your skill and enjoyment of running the trails.
As well as seeing your own progress on the virtual map and in Results' tables, you'll also be able to pit yourself against a friend, other members of your running club or even one of the elite inov-8 athletes. The great thing is, you're in control of your own goal and challenge - it might be that competing 100K in three weeks would mean you'd run further than you'd thought possible or that taking part gives you motivation to get out of the house in the dark (and we all know how much better you feel once you've gone out when you really had to force yourself!). If you're one of those people for whom 100K is less than your weekly mileage, you'll be able to continue going around the route for the duration to see how many miles you can rack up...or maybe how many metres of vertical elevation you can achieve.
We've teamed up with inov-8 to offer some fantastic prizes and, in keeping with our ethos of inclusivity, we're not simply going to be awarding them to the people who run the furthest or fastest.
However, for the first male and first female finisher of the 100K route, there's the amazing prize of a free place to the sold out 2021 event!
We asked our Facebook audience for their thoughts about other prizes and have included their ideas in the prize categories:
The winner in each category will win a £50 inov-8 voucher
Other prizes include:
Trips to inov-8 HQ in Staveley* on the edge of the Lake District to go for a run with Team inov-8, including an ambassador or two and an inov-8 goody bag! Plus, you can bring a friend along!
Entry to Lakeland Trails 2021 events (including the sold out Ultra 55K and 100K)
Vouchers to Lake District attractions
*The winners will be responsible for making their own way to Staveley on the date specified and all prizes are subject to Competition Ts and Cs
We've had a few questions about our Virtual Ultra so we thought we'd respond to them as FAQs
Since we're not able to run together on real courses, a virtual run gives you the opportunity to run wherever you are and watch your progress on a map of the virtual course you have chosen to take part on.
Unlike the real Ultra, there's no cut-off time so you can take as long as you like over the three weeks that the event will be running for.
The simple answer is no! Every run (or walk) you do will count towards your total mileage so you could do ten 10K runs or twenty 5K runs - or any combination that works for you.
Like our real Ultra, it's perfectly fine to walk or run to cover the distance. One of the great things about running an Ultra is that there's no pressure to run all the way so you can stop and take in the views!
If you've got a Strava account, you'll be able to link it up before the event so that our system will automatically updated your progress. Don't worry if you don't as there'll be the option to submit your efforts manually too.
We've had a number of requests for our headwear but our new system isn't quite ready to take orders for merchandise. We'll let you know as soon as it is and you'll be order headwear to be delivered with your Finisher's t-shirt.
Of course. We've had a sneaky peak of all three t-shirt colours and they look fab so if you'd like to have an Electric Orange one for running in the darker winter days or a smarter Black one, you'll be able to order one soon. We're still adding the functionality to our entry system to enable this.
The t-shirt's are 'Finishers'' t-shirts but as we need to order and send them out all at the same time, we'll get them dispatched as soon as we can after the event has ended on 19th December.
Our system is currently only setup to allow you to choose a size based on your gender. We'll look to make that more flexible in the future but in the meantime, just drop us a message and we can make a manual change when we place the orders.
