A stunningly-scenic route in the Lake District
A beautiful, challenging course set with a backdrop of some of the finest scenery the Lake District has to offer. This isn't a flat, boring course designed for an outright PB, it's an undulating (some may say hilly) route designed for its views and the sense of achievement. Just like the Lakeland Trails events, we encourage you to walk a bit and soak up the views but we'll be equally cheering those speedy competitive runners as they power up the hills!

Frequently Asked Questions
Parking - Very Important
Why not consider parking in nearby Ambleside, getting the 516 bus to Langdale and entering into our draw for a FREE entry for using public transport? This will reduce the impact on the local roads and community. The 516 bus timetable is HERE.
Please use our Car Sharing Facebook group to either offer or request a lift.
We have two car parking sites at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Follow satnav to LA22 9JX. Please be patient and follow the directions of our car park marshals when you arrive.
All day parking is £5. Alternatively, fill your car with 4 or more passengers and park for FREE.
Camper vans, whatever the size, must be parked in the main Stickle Ghyll pay and display car park 150m beyond our event parking. They take up much more room and weigh more than cars so cannot park on the fields which we use.
Registration
All Race Numbers must be collected from Registration in the large green gazebo on race day.
Registration opens at 9:00am on Saturday. You can collect your number up to 10.15am.
Start Lists will be available online here a week before, and we will confirm your number by email a couple of days before the event.
If you forget what your number is, you can check it on a tablet in Registration.
If you’ve got any questions about your entry, or you want to swap from the full Marathon to the Half Marathon, please go to the Enquiries desk on the right-hand side of the main marquee and a friendly face will help you.
There will be a baggage storage adjacent to the registration gazebo.
Please note there are no entries on the day and entries are not transferrable. Runners competing with someone else's number will be disqualified and will not be eligible for prizes or appear in the results.
We will also prevent them from taking part in future Lakeland Trails events, such is the safety risk if something were to happen to a person whose details we don’t have on our system.
Start and Finish
Start
All contests set off from the field in front of the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel at 10.30am.
Finish
The finish is under our Lakeland Roads gantry. When you cross the finish line, it’s really important that your whole number is clearly visible so we can give you a shout out and cross check our timing system in case of any queries.
Once you’ve finished, you’ll be able to collect your medal and a T-shirt if you ordered one!
A PA system with race commentary from our fantastic MC will keep you informed of progress of runners and give you a warm welcome as you cross the finish line!
Portable loos and a urinal unit are also on site.
Event T-shirts
The deadline to order a technical event t-shirt has now passed.
If you ordered one, your race bib will indicate the style (male or female) and size of your t-shirt. If you have deferred from last year, we will order you a t-shirt if you requested one when you entered. T-shirts are available when you cross the finish line and cannot be collected on behalf of other people.
Please note - if you are not attending the event and want us to post your event t-shirt to you, we can do so for £5. Please make that payment HERE a minimum of 3 days before the event. We cannot arrange this any later and refunds are not available, in line with our Ts and Cs.
Course information and Safety
The course will be well marked and marshalled by our magnificent volunteers, all of whom work hard to make your run as enjoyable and safe as possible.
The course is mostly on undulating narrow and winding single track road. There is a mixture of smooth, freshly laid tarmac on some sections, and others with potholes and some loose sections (particularly around Blea Tarn between mile 2 and mile 3). Please take care on these sections.
Even though it is a road race, some descents are quite steep. If you think the terrain is too tricky, it’s fine to slow down or walk!
The road is not closed to traffic. There will be signage, marshals and traffic management personnel at 2 locations to keep you safe. As it is a clockwise loop, we ask runners to KEEP TO THE LEFT on the route - please do this.
It is ESSENTIAL that you follow marshals instructions at junctions - they will instruct runners when it is safe to cross. You may have to wait briefly to cross to be safe so PLEASE do this.
VERY IMPORTANT: DOGS AREN’T ALLOWED ON THE COURSE
Marathon Cut Offs
We have 2 cut offs in place on the Marathon route. Cut offs are in place to ensure a finish before 5pm which his the latest we can hold our event.
Cut off 1 at the New Dungeon Ghyll after 13.1 miles
Cut off after 3 hours 30 mins (at 14.00)
(This allows for a pace of 16 minute per mile / 10 minutes per km)
Cut off 2 at Skelwith Bridge road junction after 21 miles
Cut off after 5 hours 20 mins (at 15.50)
(This allows a pace of 15.2 minutes per mile / 9.3 minutes per km)
Aid stations
As part of our commitment to reduce our environmental impact and to reduce single use waste at events, we are asking runners to carry their own water, or something to hold water, which can be filled quickly from jugs at our water stations. We'll have Speedcups available to buy on the day.
There are 3 water stations on the Half Marathon (at apx 3 miles, 6 miles and 10 miles), and 7 water stations on the Marathon. (at apx 3 miles, 6 miles and 10 miles, 14 miles, 15 miles, 19 miles and 23 miles).
Jelly babies and a vegan alternative will also be available at feed stations, along with ready made up VOOM electrolyte drink.
What to wear
We recommend you wear suitable inov-8 trail running shoes and bring with you hat, gloves, a waterproof jacket and overtrousers. It's not uncommon to have snow in the Lake District in April and if you need to stop out on the course for any reason, you will soon get cold.
Safety and medical support
Advanced Life Support Medics from Event Safety Group will be in attendance and our in-house Comms Team will provide radio coverage to the marshals and crew. The medics priority is medical emergencies and more severe injuries. With that in mind, they may not be able to help you with minor bumps and scrapes that you’d normally be able to sort out yourself.
If you are unable to finish your event and need to retire, you must report to the finish line or an event marshal and hand in your race number.
Please remember to treat fellow runners, members of the public, our volunteers and crew with respect. We want everyone to have an enjoyable day!
Event Centre Food and Drink
We are so fortunate to have the support of Francesca, Adam and the rest of the team at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. The event could not happen without their support and we welcome them as partners.
They will be serving food and drink through the day so please head over to their food and drink stand or into their bar for a drink - their beer garden really does take some beating! Check out their website HERE!
There will be pre-event breakfast cobs then a BBQ for hungry finishers (and their supporters). They accept cards and cash.
Exclusive Merchandise
We have a fantastic selection of merchandise available, including hoodies, long sleeved technical t-shirts and Big Bobble Hats. Check out our SHOP page for further information.
We'll have some great deals on end of line products.
Children’s Fun Trails
All children Under 12 have the chance to run alongside, or maybe even in front of, Zeraffa, the long-lost cousin of the late and much-loved Gerry the Giraffe and experience the buzz of racing. Entry is only available on the day and is free for competitors’ children. All the children are rewarded with a special finishers’ medal.
Please note: If the weather's bad, we might have to cancel this Race to avoid soaked children!
Après Event Music and Prize Giving
The legendary Singer / songwriter Kev Kendal will be performing live for an hour with Prize Giving following on afterwards. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow competitors, the organising and marshalling teams.
We hope to hold the prizegiving ceremony close to 4pm.

If there are 4 or more people in your car, parking is FREE!
Volunteers
The event can't take place without our friendly marshals who are there to keep you safe. Our experienced crew give you a full briefing and some goodies so you can be confident of your role. If you want to volunteer to help us in any way we would love to hear from you. Check out our volunteers' page for more details.
Lost Property
After the excitement of the race, it can be easy to forget to pick something up. If you think you've lost / forgotten something, please contact us HERE and we'll see if we can locate the item. Items can be collected at a future event free of charge or posted back to you. For the latter, please pay HERE after we've confirmed we've got your item.
