The PUMA Garburn Trail Race and Challenge is on a new 24km course through some of the most scenic countryside in the UK. "The most scenic race in Britain " (Runnersworld magazine Feb 06) The race achieved a 95% approval rating from the readers of Runnersworld in 2007 and was rated "8th Best Race in the UK in 2007" (40+ votes category).
Starting in Staveley village, the course along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways takes in panoramic views of Lake Windermere and most of the Lakeland fells. The trail follows the Kentmere valley, before the gruelling climb to the Garburn Pass. From here, it's downhill for five kilometres before the course returns to Staveley via High Borrans and Reston Scar.
Underfoot conditions are quite variable - there's a bit of everything. Short sections of tarmac, grassy footpaths, stoney bridleways with some stiles to climb over near the end, all add to the unique nature of the event. Check out the slide show of the course.
The finish arena will be quite a party, with the 40 piece samba drumming band Kookaburra All Stars playing live music, a large Entertainments Marquee with a party programme, a beer tent, food stalls, retail stands, PA race commentary, bouncy castle & slide, face painting and lots more.
The course has kilometre markers and three water stations with Wilson's chocolate coated Kendal Mint Cake. There are some great prizes on offer for the trail race, and winners prizes in the veteran classes. All the finishers receive a quality, specially designed event T shirt and will have a chance of winning a spot prize donated by local businesses.
A new Bridgedale Sport Trail (approx 5km) is scheduled for everyone 12 years of age and older - ideal for the novice or younger trail runner..
There are children's Fun Trails too for under 8's (350m) under 10's (700m) and under 12's (1000m) - short laps around the finishing arena for all abilities. Every finisher gets a specially engraved medal, and there are winner's prizes for the first three boys and girls in each age class and junior spot prizes too.
The senior entry fee includes finisher's T shirt, a substantial hot Wilf's meal at the finish and a contribution to our nominated charity Kendal Mountain Rescue.
A great family day out !
